Taking the Champagne Tour at Pommery! |
The grounds of Pommery |
Entrance to the Winery |
Jeanne Alexandrine Louise Pommery
Upon Alexandre's death in 1860, his widow Louise Pommery assumed full control of the business. She purchased 120 limestone and chalk pits, so-called crayères, carved underneath 12 miles of the city of Reims by Roman soldiers during their occupation of Gaul. These unique cellars allowed her to store and age over twenty million bottles in a temperature-controlled environment. Many other Champagne houses later followed suit |
You don't realise how big this is until you stand
in front of it! |
Information about "Le Grand Foudre" |
Entrance to the "Caves" |
I will take the last one on the left!!!! 15Litres worth of
Champagne, what a party that would be or one hell
of a hangover! |
15 Litres, 12 Litres and Magnum |
Madame Pommery was a great supporter
of the Arts and today the company is still
a strong support. Many exhibits are
found through the estate, this being one of
them |
Plague located at the of the stairs leading down to the
caves |
It's a long walk down! |
Beautiful Chandelier located in the cave |
One of many halls in the cave. 18 kms in total
of cellars are located here, one of they largest
in the Region |
45,707 bottles are located in just this cellar alone |
Bottles as far as they eye can see |
Another hallway |
Pommery produces over 500,000 cases of
Champagne each year. |
There is over 20,000,000 bottles of champagne
located through the cellars at any given time. |
These bottles will set for years before they
ever make it to store shelf.. It was difficult to
write Philippe on the bottle so l only managed
"Phil 2012" |
Dusty indeed! Bottles are wrapped in plastic so the
dust isn't actually on the bottle itself |
Each bottle holds 15 Litres! |
Just to give you an idea how big
these bottles really are! |
Many stone cravings located through the caves |
Champagne from 1874 to 1970! |
More cravings, this on is red because the light
was too strong causing the stone to change to colour |
More aged Champagne, 1929-2008. If you are looking
for a bottle from the year you were born, chances are
they have it, cost will vary, depending on your age! :) |
Philippe checking out the caves! |
"Can l just take one of these home, please??" :) |
Tour is done, now the long walk
back up again! |
Tour over, now it's time to try the Champagne!!! |
Four different kinds and of course we had to try them all! |
Cheers to you! |
He doesn't look like he is enjoying it at all! |
Just some of there different bottles |
And some are specially designed as well.
If you should ever get a chance to tour the Champagne Region of France and you enjoy the taste of Champagne then make a point of taking one of the many tours offered by the Champagne Houses. The tour at this House took about one hour and the price starts at 12.00 euros, without a glass of champagne at the end.
I have included for you their website, for your information..
